Lisa Bielawa (CRF 2004) recently shared news of her upcoming events with us.

Her piece In medias res will have its long-awaited New York premiere at Carnegie Hall on April 15, 2023, in a performance by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. BMOP commissioned and premiered this piece when Bielawa was their Music Alive Composer-in-Residence from 2006-2009. In medias res combines 15 brief solo pieces dedicated to each of the main ensemble players, and Bielawa wrote it as a thank you and farewell gift to Gil Rose, the players of BMOP, and the many wonderful individuals of the Boston music community who welcomed and integrated her into their lives over those three years. In medias res is also part of BMOP’s 2010 2-CD set of Bielawa’s music (listen here). Bielawa is currently enjoying another fruitful and engaging orchestral residency with the Louisville Orchestra as part of their inaugural Creators Corps program, which brings composers to Louisville to live there full time for a year, immersing themselves in the community. Bielawa’s next big project with the LO is Louisville Broadcast on April 23, 2023. This will be an outdoor, spatial symphony for hundreds of musicians. They expect over 500 professional, student, and amateur musicians from throughout Jefferson County to participate in two performances – one at Shelby Park and one at Big Four Bridge. Each performance will be 45 minutes long, and will turn these important historical locations in Louisville into vast musical canvases, allowing listeners to walk freely among the performers.  Participate by signing up for the Town Criers, a community choir for anyone who would like to join regardless of musical background, or by contributing text to be considered for inclusion in the piece. Read more here.

Bielawa’s new orchestral piece for the Louisville Orchestra, Send The Carriage Through, was premiered in January. Send The Carriage Through was inspired in part by Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, but also by Teddy Abrams’ leadership in Louisville and Bielawa’s time thus far with the orchestra and the community. Send the Carriage Through is, at its core, a gift of gratitude to the orchestra’s players and a celebration of Teddy’s own open-hearted vision of leadership as connection and invitation. Teddy will be also bringing the piece to the Britt Music & Arts Festival in Jacksonville, Oregon for its West Coast premiere on June 24, 2023.
