Heather Ewing Appointed Executive Director of Civitella Ranieri Foundation

Ewing brings a wealth of experience as an arts administrator and a creative interdisciplinary scholar. 

New York, NY — July 15th, 2024 — The Board of Directors of Civitella Ranieri Foundation (CRF), an Italy-based residency program that brings together visual artists, writers, and composers from around the world, is happy to announce the appointment of Heather Ewing as its new Executive Director. She will take up her position on September 16th, 2024.

“Our board conducted a national search for our next Executive Director and found the perfect fit a few blocks away,” said Board Chair Jennifer Dowley. “We looked for someone with a deep-seated imagination and integrity, a commitment to artists’ work, and a strong track record in nonprofit administration. We found all of that and more in Heather. Her fluency in Italian will be a key asset as she guides our program in Italy, and her collaborative nature will ensure rich partnerships with our talented staff, alumni Fellows, Director’s Guests, Affiliates, and Board of Directors. We very much look forward to welcoming Heather in September.”

Ewing brings a wealth of experience as both an arts administrator and a creative interdisciplinary scholar. She comes to Civitella from the New York Studio School, where she is the Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs. Previously, she served as the founding executive director of the Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA). She has also worked at the Sir John Soane’s Museum in London and the John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida.

Ewing has been affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, where she is a research associate, since the beginning of her career. She has been the recipient of a number of prestigious grants and fellowships, including the Helen Wallis Fellowship at the British Library, a multi-country fellowship from the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, a research grant from the British Academy, and fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, the Science History Institute, and the American Philosophical Society. She is the author of a number of books, including The Lost World of James Smithson: Science, Revolution, and the Birth of the Smithsonian, and in 2021 she curated ARRIVALS at the Katonah Museum of Art, an exhibition exploring American myths and origin stories. 

Civitella Ranieri is celebrating its 30th year, having hosted more than 1,000 artists, writers, and composers from more than 100 nations, at all stages in their careers, since 1995. Civitella’s residency program supports Fellows to pursue their work independently and communally without judgment or interruption and to exchange ideas in a peaceful setting, deepening their connections with one another and the world at large.

Civitella Ranieri is located in the heart of Umbria, Italy, in a 15th-century castle that has been a seat of the Ranieri family since its construction. In the 1960s, Ursula Corning, a distant member of the Ranieri family, established a summer retreat at the castle for her artist, writer, and musician friends. The Foundation grew out of her wish to continue to support artistic endeavors through fellowships that offer an ideal setting and supportive community for work that transcends disciplines and cultures.

Quest’anno Civitella Ranieri festeggia il suo trentesimo anniversario. Ad oggi, la Fondazione ha ospitato più di 1.000 borsisti tra Fellows e Director’s Guest, in momenti emergenti e consolidati delle loro carriere, provenienti da oltre 100 paesi. Dal 1995 il programma della Fondazione Civitella Ranieri permette ai borsisti di lavorare in maniera indipendente in un contesto di comunità e di intercambiare idee in un ambiente unico e stimolante. Il programma offre ai borsisti un soggiorno accogliente, grazie al quale è possibile approfondire legami interpersonali e internazionali.

Civitella ha sede in un castello del XV secolo nel cuore dell’Umbria, di proprietà della famiglia Ranieri fin dalla sua costruzione. Negli anni Sessanta, una loro parente, Ursula Corning, ha ospitato al castello artisti, scrittori e musicisti suoi amici, creando una vera e propria residenza estiva. La Fondazione nasce dal suo desiderio di continuare a sostenere le arti attraverso fellowship che forniscano spazio, tempo e vita comunitaria per un lavoro capace di oltrepassare i confini artistici, culturali e geografici in un ambiente intimo e stimolante.
