Pianist and composer Eric Wubbels’ (CRF 2014) work has achieved new heights in an album of collaborations with two younger artists. After moving to Western Massachusetts with his wife in 2020, where they have a grand piano, Wubbels began deeply engaging with improvisation. “’It’s kind of a risky thing to do,’ Wubbels said. ‘At a certain point, no one is interested in you being a beginner.’”

This study resulted in Wubbels’ new album on the Out of Your Head label, “Field of Action / contraposition.” The record documents complementary collaborations with two younger musicians and reflect some of the growth Wubbels was after. To celebrate the release, Wubbels appeared with his collaborators, vocalist Charmaine Lee and trombonist Weston Olencki, at Roulette on Monday; the concert is streaming on the venue’s website and YouTube account.
