Four of Ann Harleman (CRF 2007)’s poems have been published in English and Italian, translated by Marina Romani, in a recent issue Italian Poetry Review. Below is her “Parts of Speech” in both English and Italian.
PARTS OF SPEECH
Light is whole but colorless. A prism
parts its fragments.
He loves her eyes, wrists, legs; even
her mind: what she’ll say next.
What he can’t say: I love you.
A seamless sentence, perfect balance, pronoun
at either end, a see-saw
with both riders in mid-air.
Dismembered, she says it.
Her sentence barrels through the space
between them, meeting no reply. This syntax,
then must do:
her breast in his hand;
his lips on her eyelids;
their bellies pressed together.
A hundred small connections
With no verb between.
PARTI DEL DISCORSO
La luce è intera ma incolore. Un prisma
la suddivide in frammenti.
Di lei, lui ama gli occhi, i polsi, le gambe; persino
la mente: ciò che lei sta per dire.
Ciò che lui non può dire: I love you.
Scorrevole, la frase, equilibrio perfetto, pronome
ai due estremi, un’altalena
ed entrambi a mezz’aria.
Smembrata, lei la dice.
La frase fila attraverso lo spazio
tra loro, senza risposta. E allora questa sintassi basterà:
il seno di lei nella sua mano,
le labbra di lui sulle sue palpebre,
le pance pressate l’una sull’altra.
Centinaia di piccole connessioni
E tra loro nessun verbo.
