PEN America is thrilled to announce the longlists for the 2019 PEN America Literary Awards. This year’s awards will confer more than $370,000 to writers and translators whose exceptional literary works were published in 2018, spanning fiction, nonfiction, poetry, biography, essays, science writing, sports writing, translation, and more.
The Civitellians on the longlists include:
Jenny Xie (CRF 2018)’s Eye Level longlisted for the PEN Open Book Award; “for an exceptional book-length work of any genre by an author of color, published in the United States in 2018.”
Alexander Chee (CRF 2011)’s How to Write an Autobiographical Novel longlisted for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay; “for a book of essays published in 2018 that exemplifies the essay form.”
Andrea Barnet (Director’s Guest 2013 and current Advisory Council Member)’s Visionary Women: How Rachel Carson, Jane Jacobs, Jane Goodall, and Alice Waters Changed Our World, longlisted for the PEN/Bograd Weld Prize for Biography; “for a distinguished biography published in 2018.”
and Eliza Griswold (CRF 2011)’s Amity and Prosperity is longlisted for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction; “to honor a distinguished book of general nonfiction published in 2017 or 2018.”
