On May 23rd, 2025 in Avezzano, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew (CRF 2021) will present her latest project, “SHELTERED,” about the history of Italian families in Abruzzo who provided refuge to escaped Indian Prisoners of War during WWII.
She writes, “these individuals risked their lives to provide refuge to escaped Indian Prisoners of War, despite the dangers they faced and the barriers of race and language. This story highlights the courage and humanity that emerged in the midst of conflict.”
To bring this poignant history to life, Annu projected photographs of both the families and soldiers in the places where these events unfolded. By animating the sites of this lost history she bridges past and present, eighty years later. Details below:
