Mariel Roberts will perform:

Spinner, an experimental solo George Lewis composed for Mariel in 2016.

Lobelia, written by Askhan Behzadi for Mariel as part of the Boccaccio Project, the Library of Congress’ response to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Cara, one of Mariel’s own compositions for cello.

The three composers will be in conversation following the performance.

Mariel Roberts is known for her experimentation as an interpreter, improvisor, and composer. Her work bridges avant-garde, contemporary, classical, improvised, and traditional music. Roberts has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician across four continents, most notably as a member and co-director of the Wet Ink Ensemble.

Ashkan Behzadi is an Iranian–Canadian composer whose genre-blurring aesthetic aims to invoke the collective memory of folklore music. His work has been commissioned and performed by international ensembles, including TAK Ensemble, Oerknal Ensemble, JACK Quartet, Divertimento Ensemble, and Ensemble Alternance.George Lewis, composer and professor of music at Columbia University, is a MacArthur Fellow, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy, and a member of the Akademie der Künste Berlin. A pioneer of interactive computer music, Lewis’s compositions are performed by ensembles worldwide. He is Artistic Director of the International Contemporary Ensemble.
