2022 PEN Literary Awards: Kirsten Valdez Quade (CRF 2017) was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel. Dagmawi Woubshet (Incoming Writing Fellow 2022) was a judge for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction. Safiya Sinclair (Incoming Writing Fellow 2023) was a judge for the PEN/Voelcker Award for Poetry Collection; Mai Der Vang (CRF 2017) was a finalist for the same award, which Rigoberto González (CRF 2013) announced in addition to judging the PEN Open Book Award. Cathy Park Hong (CRF 2021) announced Divya Victor, author of Curb, as the recipient of the Open Book Award and therefore an incoming Fellow at Civitella. Jennifer Grotz (CRF 2021) and Piotr Sommer (CRF 2007) received the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation for their book, Everything I Don’t Know, translated to English from Jerzy Ficowski’s original Polish.
Academy of Arts and Letters Music Awardees – The awardees were selected by a committee of Academy members including Chen Yi (CRF 1997, Juror), George Lewis (CRF 1998, Juror), and Chinary Ung (CRF 1997). Katherine Balch (CRF 2021), Marcos Balter (CRF 2012, Juror), Orlando Jacinto García (CRF 2011), James Mobberley (CRF 2009), and Eric Nathan (Incoming Music Fellow 2022) were awarded.
2022 Venice Biennale – Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe (Incoming Visual Arts Fellow 2023), Saodat Ismailova (Incoming Visual Arts Fellow 2023), Diego Marcon (Incoming Visual Arts Fellow 2023), and Amy Sillman (CRF 1999) will participate in the main exhibition entitled The Milk of Dreams.
2022 NEA Creative Writing Fellows – Laura van den Berg (CRF 2018), Tomás Morin (Incoming Writing Fellow 2022) and Asako Serizawa (Incoming Writing Fellow 2022) were awarded.
2022 Grammy nominations – Christopher Cerrone (CRF 2012, Juror) was nominated for his most recent album, The Arching Path, in the category of Best Classical Compendium. Esperanza Spalding’s (CRF 2018) Songwrights Apothecary Lab is nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
