Angèle Etoundi Essamba (Incoming Visual Arts Fellow 2022) shared news of her current and upcoming shows.
Renaissance is on view through April 20 at Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. Night in/Day out is a concept by the Nederlands Fotomuseum in which artworks are projected on the windows of the museum from sunset to sunrise and can be admired from outside. Renaissance is the eighth edition of this project. The work of photographer Angèle Etoundi Essamba’s (Cameroon, 1962) primarily reflects on the identities of African women and the wealth of African cultures. With contrast-rich and stylized photography, Essamba lets her images shine in a wealth of power and color.
Droit de Regard is on view through May 31st at Galerie Les Arts du Soleil in Geneva.
“…Through the African woman, it is the whole of humanity who is Essamba’s source of inspiration. She approaches her creation as a manifesto that goes far beyond simple artistic creation to carry her convictions and struggles for freedom in its most complete forms. This is reflected in the views she has been captured over a period of nearly thirty five years… The looks of the women she reveals claim all this ‘right of view’ that the artist instills in them, right of inventory, right of observation, right of evaluation and therefore right to change things and the race of the world. We enter these portraits as in calm waters, but the wind can rise at any time and the wave breaks and carries us away for our greatest happiness.”
Essamba’s work will be featured at the 2022 Venice Biennale, as a part of the 59th International Art Exhibitiion entitled “The Milk of Dreams.” There will be a preview on April 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd from 10am-7pm. Essamba’s work is also featured in Cameroon’s first-ever pavilion at the Biennale. The show is called The Time of the Chimeras and will be available from April 23rd-November 27th, 2022.
