My stay at Civitella allowed me to anchor myself in nature and the long horizon of time: each morning I would walk for several hours in the hills surrounding the castle, inhaling vistas familiar from Renaissance paintings, savoring the light, the clouds, the fragrance of the clover fields. All of this was woven into my work during the afternoons. I was far more productive and imaginatively engaged than I often find I am able to be when sucked into the mundane daily grind of home.
