My time at Civitella afforded me the opportunity to compose the complete draft short score of Man Made, a work for soprano and chamber orchestra (to be premiered by Anu Komsi and the Philharmonia Orchestra in May 2018 at the Royal Festival Hall, London). The piece is a setting of three poems – Ocean, Rainforest and Icefield – on environmental themes by David Harsent, and was unexpectedly influenced along the way by my reading The Cosmic Serpent (by Jeremy Narby) while mid-way through the second movement; thanks to fellow fellow Kate Tempest for this recommendation. While this was my main project, the residency also afforded me the chance to rekindle the practice of ink drawing, expand my theremin repertoire (with Chris Brown’s piece Snake charmer) and to work on revisions and edits for a number of existing scores, including Aimless Wonder.
