The work that I was able to do at Civitella was new work and at the close of my residency was in progress.
I developed the craft of weaving to make a screen and lamp that both was a map of and changed light that was coming into my studio space. The light was mapped with cotton string as well as masking tape on the floor and chairs in the studio, cotton string to show the 3D vectors of the light coming into the studio from sunlight through the studio windows, as well. The idea was to map a spectrum of electromagnetic waves (EM) both the visible through the light coming into my studio as well as the invisible EM waves through the inclusion of copper wiring into the woven fabric to make a wide band antenna to pick up available EM waves in the studio. These invisible waves need to be translated into something that humans could hear ( or see) through a speaker attached by wires to the fabric or a light attached to the copper in the fabric. I prefer using sound to translate these invisible EM waves. This is the next step for the project. Now that I understand how to weave what I want, I will continue to add copper to the woven cotton and wool panels and to make an electronic interface to connect to the copper wire in the cloth to make an antenna that people can interact with.
