The time at Civitella Ranieri gave me everything I needed. From the moment I arrived the staff was attentive to the littlest detail and made me feel not only welcome but also as if what I was doing was special.. My studio was beautiful-spacious and filled with light—and I was able to immediately focus and work. The landscape is one of the most beautiful in the world and I found that even the time I spent hiking on my own and walking into town to be ameliorating and inspiring and this meant I could work deeply with focus and clarity. There was a deep respect afforded to people’s time and space and artistic practice and I was able to be disciplined in ways that I find hard in the ‘real world’ with all its demands. I had expected the cliche, specifically time to work. What I hadn’t expected was the way the residency provided succor and healing through the great care provided. I felt every Fellow was particular and seen and that no one was more special than the other.
Civitella Ranieri is well run and a great deal of thought is put into special programs meant to support each artist’s practice. The residency did a great job of balancing the idea of cultural exchange with respect for our time. This ethos informed every part of the social life of the residency.
