We arrived at Civitella with a hard drive full of recordings of plastic objects, and we have worked on assembling those sounds into an album that was already in progress when we came to the castle. But the discovery of the acoustic space of the castle itself was a revelation, and, armed with portable digital recorders and microphones, we quickly set about exploring the different resonant objects and sound sources and spaces of Civitella: its cranky gate, fizzing water cooler, echoing cantina, the Bosendorfer in the Don Giovanni room, the rowing machine in the exercise room, the nightly chorus of cicadas, the chalice in its chapel, a particularly squeaky drawer. Poking around, Martin discovered the larger subterranean chamber of the castle’s cistern, and we asked other Fellows Ben Goldberg and Kate Soper to play clarinet and sing into the cistern’s rich space. We also had poet Brandon Som read his poem “Spoke Shaves” for us in Pizza, our studio. The result was a large archive of Civitella-specific recordings that we then used as sources for improvised concerts in Rome and Umbertide and for our private presentation of other fellows. Going forward, we hope to assemble these sounds into a free-standing work. As an example of our time as Fellows, we include a version of our manipulation of Brandon’s voice and the entry gate to the castle.
