I sent a box ahead not knowing what I would find or discover or create when I arrived. A bit of a security blanket, a place to start, some familiar tools and objects (combs, hair, cloth) to have on hand. I arrived and quickly deep friendships formed. Was that the magic of the place or the magic of the people? Regardless, ideas flourished. Who knew I would make hundreds of drawings using human hair as the line, an appropriation of Domenico Gnoli’s work in hair dye, and artwork within the covers of the Italian translation of Alan Pauls’ novel, A History of Hair. Filled with unexpected accomplishments and the seeds of new possibilities, I repacked my box and sent it home
