Composer Gabriela Ortiz (CRF 2009) was recently profiled in the New York Times by Javier C. Hernández. The 2024-2025 Carnegie Hall composer-in-residence, Gabriela has always “channeled the sounds and sensibilities of Latin America into classical music.” Her work is often centered around historical figures and revolution in Latin America, especially Mexico, where Gabriela grew up, and showcases her background in both vernacular and academic musical traditions. In recent years, her pieces have been performed by the Los Angeles, Berlin, and New York Philharmonics, and the San Francisco and Cincinnati Symphonies, among others.
