Vocalist Ganavya Doraiswamy (CRF 2021) and composer Sivan Eldar (CRF 2021) met during their residency at Civitella in 2021. Their time at the Castle gave rise to an extraordinary collaboration that is still in progress, now with director Peter Sellars: an opera-in-progress called “Nine Jewelled Deer.” This month, Villa Medici in Rome hosted Doraiswamy, Eldar, Sellars and others to develop and perform the work-in-progress, where they were joined by three musical soloists: cellist Severine Ballon, computer music designer Augustin Muller, and Rajna Swaminathan, who plays the Mridangam, a percussion instrument. The work is expected to premiere in 2025 at the Aix-en-Provence festival.
