Composer Hannah Kendall (CRF 2021) was featured in this Sunday’s New York Times ahead of the premiere of her piece “He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing” at Lincoln Center on Friday, August 9. The piece will be played by the Festival Orchestra alongside Robert Schumann’s Second Symphony. Schumann has been an influence for Hannah, not only as a composer, but as an artist wrestling with issues of mental health. Her forthcoming piece responds to his music, among other inspirations, with her distinctive sound methods: using tools ranging from standard orchestra instruments to music boxes, harmonicas, and walkie-talkies. The NYT article also mentions two other Civitellian influences in Hannah’s music: George E. Lewis (CRF 1998) and Ocean Vuong (CRF 2016, DG 2022). Click to read the full piece.
