Current Visual Arts Fellow Devan Shimoyama and former Writing Fellow Rickey Laurentiis (CRF 2014) began as collaborators, when Rickey wrote an essay for the catalogue of Devan’s 2016 solo museum exhibition at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. In Civitella style, the relationship soon transformed to friendship.
In Civitella’s June newsletter, Rickey and Devan spoke to us about queerness, art making, and friendship. Rickey told us, “Our work, mine in poetry and his in painting, comprehend the other, and encourage each other toward risk in the work and to tell the honest truth. What does love amount to? What is seen truly in a face? How does myth shape us? Who—what identities—deserves attention? Why demand beauty? These are our questions.”
