Mikael Karlsson (CRF 2025) and Michael P Atkinson wrote the original score for the Scottish Ballet’s Mary, Queen of Scots, making its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland from August 15th to 17th. The score is a textured blend of Scottish folk motifs, Elizabethan jigs, and electro-acoustic drama.
Choreographed by Sophie Laplane and co-created with director James Bonas, the ballet is told through the fragmented memories of a dying Elizabeth I. The result is a bold blend of historical drama and punk-infused surrealism, anchored by music from the team behind 2022 hit Coppélia and performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra.
The company presents this premiere at the festival before taking it on a national tour in September and October.
