Music, Switzerland/Nigeria

Charles Uzor was born in Nigeria in 1961 and came to Switzerland during the Biafra war. In 1990 he earned a Master’s degree from the Royal Academy of Music, and in 2005 he earned his PhD in Melody and Time Awareness. Uzor’s oeuvre focuses on pieces with ensemble and voice. Nri/mimicri, with bird song lowered by octaves, represents Uzor’s concern with mimicry, identity, and Derek Parfit’s philosophy of personality. Recent pieces such as Mothertongue, on the loss of language, and 8’46’’, in memory of George Floyd, strengthen Uzor’s political positions. Uzor’s latest piece is The Great Wall, written for the vocal ensemble Ekmeles.
