UMBRIAN CERAMICS WITH ROB RAPHAEL

 March 30 – APRIL 6, 2025

Spend a week at the Civitella Ranieri Castle in Umbertide, Italy while going on a deep dive into the history and craft of Umbrian ceramics.

The world has long been fascinated by the history of Italian Ceramics. Civitella Ranieri is situated in the heart of Umbria, a region at the center of unique historical and contemporary ceramics production. Led by Rob Raphael, a 2018 NEA Ceramics Fellow to Civitella Ranieri, the tour will focus on the sites in Umbria, with excursions to nearby Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. During and after his fellowship, Raphael became deeply interested in the many traditions of ceramics in the area. Drawing from his own artistic practice and research, Raphael has crafted a fascinating and comprehensive journey through the world of ceramics in and around Umbria.

This tour will provide an inside look at the diverse traditions of Italian ceramics of the region, through museums, history and direct engagement with contemporary local artisans. For more details about the schedule and site visits, see this PDF.
