My time at Civitella was transformative, coming out of two years isolation Civitella provided a safe environment to reflect on my practice, to discover a new way of working and to connect to people. The conversations I had with Fellows and visitors are my treasures along with witnessing the castle waking up slowly while sipping my coffee at 7 am at Volte, saying Buongiorno to Leandro, Marco, Patrizia and Romana.
I worked on and created an installation in the Castle Gallery, WE ARE NOT MEANT TO BE SEEN – ANGELA, a multi-media exploration of local labor, tradition, womanhood, and their relationship to the present. Collaborated with locals from Umbertide to gather wool, thread, and tobacco as well as stories, songs, and conversations. At the center of the project was the breuccio, a piece of red silk sewn into a sachet to hold coarse salt; breucci are shared between women to protect from evil spirits. The project grew out of our conversations with Angela and came out of a desire to give new meaning to symbolic objects that belong to the past.
