While at Civitella (June-August 2021) I composed a number of works for or featuring piano, making ample use of the beautiful Steinway in Tinaia. In the realm of song, I worked first on “Swivel” (for soprano and piano), setting text by Royce Vavrek as part of a larger cycle which reflects on the history of the photographic self-portrait. I then turned my attention to a work-in-progres for flute and piano commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation through the LIbrary of Congress (There Once… for Duo Axis), for which I happily collaborated with a number of Civitellian poets for imagistic epigraphs. Lastly, I composed a new song for my ongoing music-theatrical project with librettist/lyricist Mark Campbell (“The Broken Oar” from Unruly Sun).
