Join us on Thursday, August 22nd at the Castle for Learning Your Lesson, a Talk by Matthew Bevis. We will welcome you with light refreshments at 6:00 PM.
Learning Your Lesson is a talk taken from Then Again: Notes on Wonder, a book Bevis is currently writing for Harvard University Press. Stylistically, the book is an experimental hybrid – part memoir, part poetics, part speculative essaying – with a main focus on lyric and lyric experience. Bevis is especially interested in close family relation and forms of wonder, of which various states and moments come to the fore along the way: déjà vu; bemusement; distraction; waking. Near the heart of the book Bevis includes the opening of one of Emily Dickinson’s poems: “Wonder—is not precisely Knowing / And not precisely Knowing not –”.
Matthew Bevis is a Professor of Literature at the University of Oxford. His books include Comedy: A Very Short Introduction (2012) and Wordsworth’s Fun (2019). His essays have appeared in Poetry, The London Review of Books, The New York Review of Books, Raritan, and Harper’s. He also runs a range of initiatives and seminars on poetry in collaboration with Adam Phillips, T. J. Clark, and others.
