Heather Stebbins’ (CRF 2025) latest composition, On Separation was released on May 30, 2025. On the sound artist’s new album, Stebbins dives into memory, intuition, and transformation. She begins with domestic field recordings: the sounds of her children, wind chimes ringing nonchalantly, the movement of people through undefined space. She then folds in layers of texture with her cello, each lamination increasingly delicate and glass-like. With the addition of electronics, she introduces an agent of ambiguity. The result is an exploratory album where these elements together — cello, electronics, and field recordings — blur the lines between past and present, with long arcs that take on the quality of sighs, occupying the space between melancholy and contentment.
