From May 13 to June 7, Brad Kahlhamer (CRF 2022) presents his first solo exhibition, “Bowery Nation: Birds Are Talking,” at Venus Over Manhattan in New York City.

This latest iteration of his ongoing “Bowery Nation” series, including eight bedsheet paintings and a newly conceived “Supercatcher” sculpture, traces a deeply personal cosmology shaped by Indigenous storytelling, punk aesthetics, Abstract Expressionism, and the textures of NYC street life.

The centerpiece, “Mesa, 6:00 AM” (2024) (image one), began outdoors in the Arizona desert, with Kahlhahmer folding and transporting it in his carry-on luggage as he moved between several locations — including his residency at Civitella — before completing it in his Bushwick studio. Like the rest of the exhibition, “Mesa, 6:00 AM” embodies Kahlhamer’s idea of the “third place,” where Indigenous heritage, urban experience, and personal history collide.
