May 1st, 2026 — Composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad (CRF 2025) premiered a major new choral work this spring at Worcester Cathedral in the United Kingdom. Five Beacons of Light: A Cantata for the Sea, created with librettist Di Sherlock, received its world premiere on April 25th, performed by professional choir Sonoro, Youth Choral Worcs, and the English Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Neil Ferris.
Commissioned to celebrate Sonoro’s tenth anniversary, the large-scale cantata responds to the climate emergency through the imagery of four iconic lighthouses—symbols of endurance, vulnerability, and human ingenuity amid rising seas and environmental instability. The work places particular emphasis on young voices, positioning them as “the fifth beacon of light”: a source of hope and collective responsibility for the future.
Cheryl is widely recognized for music that combines lyrical immediacy with emotional and intellectual depth. In Five Beacons of Light, she brings together professional and youth performers in a sweeping work that balances urgency with optimism, blending choral grandeur with environmental reflection.
The premiere took place in the dramatic setting of Worcester Cathedral and formed part of a broader season of major musical programming across the region. Audience responses described the performance as “astonishing” and praised the collaboration between young singers and professional musicians.
Following its premiere, the work travels to the Cornish coast for a performance at the Minack Theatre in July 2026, continuing its journey through landscapes shaped by the sea that inspired the cantata itself.
