May 6th, 2026 (Updated May 12th) — Current Civitella writer in residence Mathias Énard has been awarded the Ceppo Lifetime Achievement Award, established by the Ceppo International Literary Prize, directed and chaired by Paolo Fabrizio Iacuzzi, now in its 70th year. 

“One of the most significant voices in new French literature,” writes La Nazione, the writer will be honored in Florence on Wednesday, May 6th during an event at the Sala delle Feste of the Regional Council of Tuscany. It will highlight the relationship between East and West in his work, a paradigm that is critical for Mathias and more relevant than ever in this crucial historical juncture of war and crisis.

Mathias will then travel to Pistoia on Thursday, May 7th, to the Terzani Auditorium of the San Giorgio Library, where he will deliver a talk about the first twenty-five years of his career, from La perfezionamento del tiro to Malinconia dei confini. Nord, just awarded the Gregor von Rezzori Prize for best translation into Italian by Yasmina Melaouah.

On Friday, May 8th, at the Poma Foundation in Pescia, Mathias will give a lecture on “Pinocchio: from Cervantes to the Twentieth Century,” in conversation with writer and critic Alessandro Raveggi, a member of the Award’s jury. All the events will also be attended by high school students.
