Rebecca Chace (CRF 2021) brings her new play Obit to New York this September at Theater for the New City September 17th to October 4th.
Set in a dystopian future, the play follows Maya Hawthorne, an advance obituary writer for The New York Times, who arrives at a college to interview its president about his legacy. But Maya has a personal reason for being there: she believes the president’s actions years earlier helped destroy her mother’s life.
Part revenge thriller, part examination of power, class, and institutional legacy, Obit explores the complicated boundaries between justice and revenge—and who gets to write the final version of someone’s story. Rebecca draws on her own experience as an advance obituary writer in crafting the play.
Obit runs September 17th through October 4th at Theater for the New City, with performances Thursday through Sunday.
